Dear BVU Students,
As part of Buena Vista University's commitment to student health and compliance with Iowa law, we are providing important information about meningococcal disease (meningitis) and the benefits of vaccination.
What is Meningococcal Disease?
Meningococcal disease is a serious infection caused by a bacteria or virus. It can lead to meningitis, an infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord, or bloodstream infections. Although rare, meningococcal disease can become severe very quickly and may result in serious complications or death.
Common Symptoms
- Sudden fever
- Severe headache
- Stiff neck
- Nausea or vomiting
- Sensitivity to light
- Confusion
- Rash
If you experience these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
How is it Spread?
Meningococcal bacteria are spread through close contact with respiratory and throat secretions, such as through coughing, kissing, sharing drinks, eating utensils, water bottles, vaping devices, or living in close quarters.
Vaccination Information
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends meningococcal vaccination for adolescents, young adults, and individuals at increased risk for meningococcal disease. College students who live in residence halls are among those who may be at increased risk due to close living environments.
Vaccination is the most effective way to help protect yourself against meningococcal disease. If you are unsure of your vaccination status, we encourage you to review your immunization records and consult with your healthcare provider.
For BVU Students
As part of Iowa requirements, students are asked to provide information regarding their meningococcal vaccination status and acknowledge receipt of information about meningococcal disease and the benefits of vaccination. Please ensure your health records are current and on file with the Wellness Center.
If you have questions about meningococcal disease, vaccination recommendations, or your health records, please contact the Wellness Center.
